Assessment Satellite on macOS

Learn how to configure and run the MCS Assessment Satellite application on macOS to perform network testing from a Mac device.

Unzip the App

The download will be a ZIP file (a compressed package) located in the Downloads folder. It will be named either macsat.zip or macsatpkg.zip.

Double-clicking the ZIP file will extract (unpack) the contents so they can be used.

Note: If the file is named macsatpkg.zip, two items will appear after extraction: another ZIP file called macsat.zip (which will also need to be double-clicked to extract) and a configuration file called testoptions.txt. This extra step depends on how the software was packaged for distribution.

Double-clicking the MCS Assessment Satellite App, as shown in the image above, will launch the application.

A confirmation dialog may appear asking whether to open the app. Clicking Open will allow the application to proceed.

Test Options

If the deployment included a testoptions.txt file, clicking the Locate Test Options button allows selection of this file from disk. The test options will then load automatically.

If no configuration file was included, clicking the Continue button allows the configuration to be defined manually.

Manual Configuration

When the app is launched without pre-configured options, the dialog shown below will appear. Each option is explained in the following section.

Manual assessment configuration options
Test Settings
Option Description
MCS Host The IP address or domain name of the test server (an installation of MCS).
Session ID An optional identifier used to help organize data on the server. If left empty, the machine name of the device running the satellite will be used instead.
Manage at Server When enabled, the satellite will appear in the Default group of the MCS satellites list. An administrator must then approve it before assigning work orders remotely.
Work Order Name Required when Manage at Server is disabled. If the specified work order exists on the test server, the satellite will begin running it automatically without further administrative action.

Once all required fields are complete, clicking the Connect button will initiate testing.
